Early Years Weekly Update

22/06/2020

Hi All,

Welcome back to the last half term of Reception. I hope your all well and healthy. This half term the topic is Water. I have set out a task on Purple Mash which your child discuss why we need water and why it's part of our everyday life. You can even take a picture of them playing with water, and they can also do an experiment on floating and sinking, which you can upload onto Tapestry.

Home learning

Maths:- This week's task is learning to use everyday language related to time and to identify o'clock and half past.

Practical activities and games

  • The children can play a game, such as What's the time Mr Wolf.
  • Draw attention to time. Mention the time at different points in the day. For example, you could say, it's 5 o'clock - time for tea...
  • Put a clock in your child's bedroom. Ideally it should have a clear hour hand and half hour hand as this will help them to understand that the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes.
  • Talk about what you regularly do at different times in the day. Compare and contrast weekdays and weekends, if there are differences. Use time vocabulary such as today, yesterday, now, afterwards.

There are many websites that provide fantastic maths activities online.

The list below are some websites I would recommend, for fun and interactive maths activities.

 https://nrich.maths.org/primary

http://bedtimemath.org/

Phonics

The children have been so brilliant with their phonics, and it would be great to keep it going.

The sound of the week is a-e make a cake. (Split diagraph)

During our phonics session we always remind the children to use fred talk fingers, in which they pinch each letter sounds on their fingers to help them to write the word.

There is a fantastic video that you can watch on youtube called Geraldine learns, that teaches you the a-e letter sounds. Click on the link below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkycxr-joDk

There are two groups.

Phonics will be slightly different as I am now back at school. I will inform the parents on what day and time I will be doing the phonics, for the home learners.

The High Frequency Word this week is around and for those children that need a bit of a challenge they can learn and memorise the word began.

Also you can draw a circle, rectangle or square on a piece of paper, and your child can draw a line to identify half of the 2D shape.

Also on a creative side, if you have paint available at home they can also learn about symmetry. Whereby, they can use paint to create an image on one side of a paper, and duplicate the image onto the other side of the paper. I have attached document that has examples of different types of painting symmetry.

Maths:- This week's task is learning to arrange a subtraction number sentence. In Reception the children should start off with a simple subtraction calculation, taking 1 away from a number between 1-20 i.e. 8 - 1 =________. If your child wants a challenge you can give them a subtraction calculation, whereby they can take 2 or 3 away from a number

i.e. 12 - 2  = ________. You can take a picture of their learning and post it onto Tapestry.

Also they can be creative, by making their own number line. I have added images of different number lines that your child can make.

To make the learning fun and enjoyable, I have attached a few ideas of games they can play, that involves subtraction.

Hi All,

I hope you had a good Easter, especially during these stressful times. Welcome back to the first half of the Summer Term. I hope your all well and healthy. This half term the topic is Superheroes. I have set out a task on Purple Mash which your child would be able to create their own superhero (so no Spiderman, Batman or Wonder women). They would need to use their imagination and explain what super powers their superhero can do.

Purple Mash https://www.purplemash.com/sch/parkwood-n4

 Home learning

I have set out a task on tapestry based on maths, whereby the children learn about money. Money is one of those concepts which is based on experience so it will take the children some time to understand it. The misconception with money is that, you would find the children thinking 2p has more value than £1 because of its size. We always emphasise the meaning of 'value', which coin has more value?. In Reception they just need to learn the value of the coins, and the value of £1. How many 1p's are in £1? If you want to give them a challenge you can teach them the value of £2 as well.

The children can play a game which they pretend to go shopping and they can pretend to purchase items, using some of the coins you may have at home. There are also PowerPoints and resources available on Twinkl.

Easter Update 03/04/2020

Hi All,

I hope this update finds you all well. I just wanted to give an update on how things are going and to offer up some suggestions for activities for the Easter holidays.

It's a very surreal and strange time, and not how we would have chosen to finish off this term. Despite this, I remain impressed with how children are engaging with their learning. It's good to see their work on Purple Mash and Tapestry, as well as using other types of resources as part of their learning. I will keep you posted on the letter sounds of the week, to help support your child through their phonics. We are currently unsure of how long this absence from school will last for, so make sure you have set a routine and keep reading!

Today (Friday) marks then last day of term and so the Easter holidays will commence for 2 weeks. I will not be available during this time but did want to make some suggestions for activities for children over this period. There is no obligation to take part, but please use the following ideas if you feel it would be useful for children to remain engaged, particularly as regular activities are unlikely to take place:

What Can We Write?

 This list should help.

 Writing a shopping list

  1. Writing a list of things, you enjoy doing
  2. Writing a sentence, a day
  3. Writing CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words (i.e. cat, dog, mud)
  4. Writing words that have 2 letters that make 1 sound (i.e. ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, ou:- may, green, might, blow, brown, poo, zoo, shout, loud, cloud)

As far as reading goes, I would definitely try and get children to stick to the normal expectations. This means at least 20 minutes a day, ideally, 30 minutes is best.

Here are some links you can use for phonics.

Ruth Miskin phonics:- This is the programme we follow as part of phonics

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

 Geraldine learns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU1MPzpuvvo

Children will still have access to Purple Mash over the break, but bear in mind I won't be around to approve emails between the children or blog posts. There are, however, some great apps on there to keep up with the English and Maths, that is included within the tools application

 Talking stories

  • Stories to tell
  • 2 count
  • 2 calculate
  • 2 write

Doing these daily will help children to progress with their learning, and get them geared up for the Summer Term. Another website you can use is I see maths, which has helpful PowerPoints on teaching maths to Reception level.

http://www.iseemaths.com/early-number/

Beyond that, this could be a great time to get stuck into something creative. Especially as this Reception class in particularly, really enjoy doing arts and crafts. It would be great if they do anything creative, to post it on Tapestry. Children could create a portfolio of their work, expressing different ideas on different days.

Finally, our theme next half term is Superheroes. We will be looking at different types of superheroes - Real and fictional.

Thank you for all the adjustments you are making at home to help the children's learning at this time, especially having juggle home schooling and the other responsibilities at home. Expect more updates from school as and when we find out more about the potential length of the closure. In the meantime, stay safe and stay positive!

Take care and all the best,

 Layla

30/03/2020

 Hi All,

I hope last week's task were easy and straight forward. I know it can be tricky having to home-school your child, as well as juggling other responsibilities at home. The work that some of children have posted on Tapestry and Purple Mash have been fantastic!

Home learning

I have set out a task on Tapestry based on maths, whereby the children can learn how to count in 2's. It would be fantastic if you can use resources that you have at home, such as pencils, spoons, lego, and the children can count the objects in groups of 2's. I.e. There are 2 pencils and there is another group of 2 pencils, how many do you have altogether (this gives them an understanding of the concept of counting in 2's). The children can learn to count in 2's to 20 (if you want to give them a challenge, they can go beyond 20).

I have also set out a to do task on Purple Mash, which the children need to create their own retell of the story of the Little Red Riding Hood. This is a story that your child is familiar with, and they can change the ending of the story to use their creative and imaginative skills.

Purple Mash https://www.purplemash.com/sch/parkwood-n4

Phonics

The children have been so brilliant with their phonics, and it would be great to keep it going.

They are familiar with the set 1 sounds which they have been doing each week, as a task in their learning logs. Most children have moved on to set 2 sounds. There is a fantastic video that you can watch on youtube called Geraldine learns, that teaches you all the letter sounds, and this week,

The sound of the week is igh fly high

The children can practice writing words that have the igh sound like light, sight, might, knight, night, bright.

The High Frequency Word this week is when and for those children that need a bit of a challenge they can learn and memorise the word asked.
